The Role of Black Cultural Centers in Fostering Belonging Among Black Community College Students.
by Larry R. Leach - 2025
Abstract
Despite increasing diversity in community colleges, Black students often report low levels of belonging while attending these institutions. This qualitative study based on belongingness theory addresses a literature gap by examining the influence of Black cultural centers (BCCs) on Black students' perceptions of belonging, specifically within the community college context. Guided by the research question: How does participation in a Black cultural center influence the sense of belonging for Black community college students? The study employed semi-structured interviews with 12 Black students with varying engagement levels with the BCC at a two-year public community college on the West Coast. Data analysis involved thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, revealing four key findings: the BCC encourages cultural and identity affirmation, fosters social connections, offers a supportive environment for academic growth, and enhances well-being and mental health. The study concludes that BCCs play a significant role in fostering a sense of belonging, promoting educational and personal thriving, and motivating persistence for Black community college students, underscoring the need for community colleges to recognize and support these centers as vital resources for equity and inclusion.
